Sunlight filtering through a canopy of native ‘ohi’a lehua trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) illuminates a new palapalai fern frond on the slopes of Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Palapalai ferns are indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands.
