After the Bloom

Once the pom-pom like flowers of ‘ohi’a lehua (metrosideros polymorpha) are pollinated, their stamen fall off leaving a single long red pistil behind on each flower. The seeds of the next generation are nurtured beneath the base of each pistil. This specimen grows on the crest of the Waianae Mountains neat Pu’u Kalena.
