‘Ohelo on the Lava

Red ‘ohelo berries (Vaccinium reticulatum) ripen on this sprig growing within the folds of a pahoehoe lava field in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawai’i. ‘Ohelo is an endemic species that is often the first to colonize a barren lava flow.
