Sandalwood Flowers
Buds of ‘iliahi, the native sandalwood (Santalum
freycinetianum), blossom along the Waimano Trail above Pu’uloa
(Pearl Harbor) on O’ahu. Prized for its fragrant heartwood,
sandalwood was the first cash crop to be exported from Hawai’i.
Large tracts of native forests were destroyed by the sandalwood
trade.
