‘Ohi’a Tree
‘Ie’ie vines (Freycinetia arborea)
twist themselves up the stout branches of this ‘ohi’a
lehua tree (metrosideros polymorpha) on the Kalawahine trail
near Pu’u ‘Ohi’a (Tantalus) on O’ahu.
The Hawaiians wove the roots of these endemic vines into a net-like
backing upon which bird feathers were tied to create feathered
capes and other articles.
