Fuzzy Red Liko

Fine hairs on the liko (young leaves) of this ‘ohi’a lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) shield its tender leaves from the harsh rays of the sun and enable them to conserve moisture. This specimen grows on the crest of the Wai’anae Mountains near Pu’u Kalena on O’ahu.
