Nuku 'i'iwi

The curved red-orange flowers of this rare nuku 'i'iwi —which in Hawaiian means “beak of the i’iwi—burst into bloom along the slopes of Ka’iholena, in The Nature Conservancy’s Ka’u Preserve. Nuku 'i'iwi (Strongylodon ruber) have evolved to be pollinated by honey creepers with long curved beaks.
