A gaggle of neneese forage in
the grass within Haleakala Crater on Maui. Brought to the brink
of extinction in the 1950’s, captive breeding programs
have begun to increase the numbers of this endangered bird.
Neneranta sandvicensis) is endemic to Hawaii and is the official
state bird.
